Colombia’s defeat against Uruguay at home and 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Ecuador during November’s international break saw them sack Carlos Queiroz.

The 67-year-old’s coaching career spanned close to three decades and it includes two different spells with Manchester United, as an assistant to the Red Devils legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.

After spending one season at Old Trafford, he took the managerial job at Real Madrid in 2003, only for him to return to the Premier League side in 2004.

Queiroz’s second spell with United came to an end in July 2008 when he took over the Portugal national team job.

During his time in England, Queiroz was part of the United side that won the Champions League in 2008 and three titles.

It’s been over seven years since United last won the league and during an interview with EFE, relayed by W Radio, Ferguson’s former right-hand man was asked how can his old club return to the top.

He said, “It is very difficult to recover your place in this Premier League, the other teams have a lot of quality. But I am going to tell you two tips that are applicable for Manchester United and that also apply to Colombia.”

“Bobby Charlton told me that the secret to United’s success was that they had loyalty and complete faith in the people who worked for them; in the best and in the worst moments; that is the secret of Manchester United. Those who are working there now have the solutions to get the team out of the bad moments.

“And another piece of advice from Alex Ferguson on United’s success was that nothing and no one is above the team. These two lessons are very important.”
