The residents of Middelfart, a town in Denmark, are dreaming of getting Christian Eriksen to the club this summer after he leaves Manchester United.

That’s at least according to head coach Kim Engstrøm, who has been speaking to Tipsbladet about the prospect of bringing the 33-year-old.

Eriksen is set to become a free agent at the end of the month when his contract with Manchester United comes to an end.

He’s already made it clear that he is planning to leave England for a different adventure, having played there for Tottenham, Brentford and Manchester United. A return to Ajax has been suggested, although that is yet to become anything concrete.

On the flip side, a return to Denmark is not currently on the cards for the midfielder, with Eriksen himself admitting he has other ideas about where he’d like to end up this summer.

That’s bad news for Middelfart, the place where he was born and played early on in his career and has maintained links since. He brought them 300,000 kroner when he joined Tottenham and, during his time at Ajax, donated a synthetic ‘Cruyff Court’ to the club.

They still love him, and their coach admits it would be everyone’s dream scenario to lure him back.

“I think that if you ask all the residents of Middelfart, they all have a dream that Christian Eriksen will one day play senior football for Middelfart,” he said when asked about Eriksen potentially returning to his hometown.

“Now we got Mads Greve home this winter from Vendsyssel, and I know that he is not quite at Eriksen’s level, but it has lifted the town a lot that one of their boys has returned home.

“It has also given a boost in terms of spectators. We have gone from 3-400 in the autumn to having over 1000 in several matches and 1500 most recently.

“It’s clear that it would give a huge boost to Middelfart Municipality. As a coach, it would also be a dream. I think he plans to play a few more years abroad before returning home, and then the question is whether he’s too old.”
