Brazilian side Fluminense are having their club elections next month. That means the presidential candidates are doing several interviews to show what they have to offer in case they are chosen.
We’re talking about a complicated club, who’s been struggling with debts, and need to spend as little money as possible.
That’s why João Pedro’s case is seen as a mistake. First because Watford have only paid €2.5m for the youngster, who’s been a star at Fluminense for the past few weeks. Second because it would be great for them to keep him for longer.
João Pedro is turning 18 in September, and is set to move in January 2020. But in an interview with Lance this week, Mario Bittencourt, who’s one of the front-runners for the presidency, claims that in case he’s elected, he will try to get to a new deal with the Hornets.
“I don’t know the agreement, I don’t know the contract, but I can assure you that if there’s any legal, ethical or sporting possibility to undo what was done, which I think was very bad, we will work for it, without breaching the agreement with the partner of the football world, if it has been done correctly,” Bittencourt told Lance.
“No bravado. If everything was done within the legality, if the conditions are real business, there is nothing to do.
“The last thing I can do is to take over a club and go against what Fluminense have signed. When I say possibility, it’s not necessarily breaking the agreement, but rather talking to the club, representative and player, saying that he needs to stay longer here and then build a path, a repurchase. Let’s evaluate all these issues.”
