If the latest rumours in Germany prove to be true, Tottenham could be setting themselves up for a tug of war with Liverpool to sign Werder Bremen’s David Philipp.
The 17-year-old forward has attracted quite a lot of interest following impressive performances in the A-Junioren Bundesliga Nord/Nordost, scoring two goals and picking up four assists in six appearances.
Mauricio Pochettino and Jürgen Klopp are both known developers of young talent, and to see them targeting the same youngster shouldn’t be a surprise.
The news was first revealed by Sky Deutschland, relayed by SportBild, but while all the headlines were about just the interest from Spurs, it’s what is being said within Werder Bremen which has caught our eye.
Relayed by Deichstube, Björn Schierenbeck, director of the Bundesliga club’s Junior Development Centre, said: “I don’t want to exclude it. How concrete it is, I don’t know”.
However, that doesn’t mean Werder Bremen have completely given up on keeping Philipp at the club, having sat down with him and present him a project he should want to get behind.
Schierenbeck continued: “We would like to continue working with David, and have already told him about how his career at Werder can continue.”
Whether that is enough to convince him not to give in to the temptation of signing for a big Premier League club remains to be seen, but there’s certainly more chance of him breaking through in Bremen in the near future than at Wembley.
All you have to do is look at the either side’s first-team talent from the midfield onwards.
