While Newcastle don’t have much left to play for other than more money depending on where they finish in the Premier League, Anderlecht are still in their league playoffs and featuring in important games.
That’s why, for now, the future of Matz Sels remains in the balance.
The Belgian goalkeeper, currently loaned to the Jupiler Pro League side until the end of the season, has been in fine form (occasional blip aside) since January, which has led to rumours of a potential long-term stay if a certain amount of money is paid to Newcastle.
A recent report from The Chronicle suggested the Magpies certainly wouldn’t be against seeing the 26-year-old leave St James’ Park, which is good news for Anderlecht, but there are still some obstacles in the way.
Needing a new goalkeeper for next season, the Belgians are keen to sort something out as soon as possible, which is why DH in Belgium report that Luc Devroe, the club’s director of football, is desperate to sit at a table with Sels to try and hash things out.
While the fee to Newcastle doesn’t appear to be a problem (around €5m), the outlet state the goalkeeper would have to agree to a wage reduction in order to be able fit within Anderlecht’s structure.
If he does, then the Jupiler Pro League side could then try and haggle the asking price down a bit, although we doubt they’ll have much success in doing so.
