As reported by Il Tempo on Monday, AS Roma are doing their best to try and convince Manchester United to sell them Chris Smalling.

The Serie A club had allegedly already made ‘at least’ three attempts to sign the player, all rejected by the Old Trafford club, who want at least €20m for the England international.

Unfortunately, as Gazzetta dello Sport explain on Tuesday, they can’t afford that unless they qualify for the Champions League, which would need the league to start up again and them to close a three (potentially six as Atalanta have a game in hand) point gap on fourth.

Furthermore, they believe that ‘half the Premier League’, which includesArsenal, Everton and Tottenham, are interested in the player.

We’ll have to see what happens, but, in the meantime, contingency plans are being drawn up, which could also include another Manchester United defender.

Gazzetta explain that if Smalling had to leave Rome after just one year, the club would have to find someone to replace him.

As was reported by the Italian newspaper over the weekend, Marcos Rojo, currently on loan at Estudiantes, is a player they like, but they do make it clear in Tuesday’s offering the casting for the role is ‘only in the beginning stages’.
