Earlier on Thursday, we covered claims in Gazzetta dello Sport that Liverpool’s interest in Alisson was causing a bit of an internal struggle within AS Roma.
The Brazilian goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, and the fact the Serie A side could be in need of money come the summer to adhere to FFP regulations is becoming a problem.
That could all change if they manage to beat Shakhtar in the Champions League, and it’s a bit too early to tell if a sale is on the cards just yet. But it’s a worry.
Calciomercato on Thursday suggest Roma have a plan against this, and want to make the most of their new star by giving him a new, very expensive, contract.
The Serie A side would be willing to hand the 25-year-old €5m/year (around £85k/week), which would include his image rights, and a release clause of €90m.
The latter would certainly give them some breathing room next summer, knowing that they’ll only have to negotiate with Liverpool or anyone else if they want to.
If they don’t, they can just point at the release clause amount and say “Pay up!”.
There are few clubs in European football who would be willing to pay such an amount for a goalkeeper, and Roma know this.
