Emerson Royal finished the first season at Tottenham Hotspur with 40 appearances in all competitions that included 26 starts in the league.

The 23-year-old was used as both a right-back and right wing-back, and managed a goal and an assist in the Premier League.

His performances have convinced Atlético Madrid to make an approach for the Brazil international this summer.

That’s according to AS, who state the La Liga side must bring in a new right-back as Šime Vrsaljko is set to leave them as a free agent, while Daniel Wass has struggled to feature regularly for Los Rojiblancos.

Diego Simeone wants to strengthen the right side of defence, but it won’t be easy due to their economic conditions.

The Spanish club are exploring options and bringing in Antonio Conte’s man is considered as the ‘best’ one. They are of the belief the Spurs player can fit into Simeone’s plans, as he knows the league very well, from his time at Real Betis and Barcelona.

Atlético’s idea is to take Emerson on a loan deal with a purchase option. To do this, they will have to negotiate with Tottenham chief Daniel Levy. That won’t be easy and if the north London club were to let him leave, it will be likelier via through a sale.

AS explain convincing Levy is a ‘very tough task’. Either way, they state this week will can be key [for Atlético] to advance or end the possibility to sign Emerson.
