Ronald Koeman has admitted Georginio Wijnaldum was on his wanted list in the last window, but Barcelona failed to sign the Liverpool midfielder and other targets.
The 29-year-old’s contract will expire after this season and rumours will grow the more times passes without an extension being signed.
‘Bargains in January’ is written in bold on the front page of Tuesday’s Mundo Deportivo, which also includes pictures of the Reds player, Eric García and Memphis Depay.
Within the report, it’s explained the Netherlands international was ‘not a priority’ target for the Catalan club because it was urgent for them to sign García and Depay. The La Liga side, however, failed to get any of the three players in the summer window.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Barca will face a ‘season full of uncertainties at an economic level’. Therefore, the planning for the 2021/22 season must be done taking the financial situation into consideration.
In this context, it would make sense for the Blaugrana to look at players who can be ‘bargain’ signings.
Wijnaldum fits into this category because of his contract situation at Anfield, and he’s liked by both Koeman and Barca’s technical leaders.
The Dutchman can operate in more than one position and Mundo states Barca will assess if they have to sign the versatile midfielder next summer.
With less than a year left on Wijnaldum’s contract, the newspaper suggests Liverpool must ‘sell fast’ and for ‘cheap’ in January, if they want to avoid losing him for nothing after this season.
