Real Madrid are ‘waiting for Manchester United’ as they look to sell Raphael Varane this summer.
That’s according to Goal’s Spanish edition, who state that the La Liga giants have only made one offer to the Frenchman to renew his contract this summer.
That proposal was made before the European Championship, and the plan is to negotiate it again as they would like to keep the defender, and he would have no problem featuring for Madrid in pre-season.
At the time he received the offer, he and his agents decided to delay making a decision as they wanted to focus on the tournament with France and think over his future.
He’s yet to respond to it as a result, and Real Madrid now ‘take it for granted’ that he will be leaving, which has caused an ‘urgent need’ to sell this summer and avoid losing him on a free next year.
That’s led to talks with Manchester United about a move, and they are expected to present something ‘formal’ in ‘the short-term’.
Varane’s relationship with Madrid is good; indeed, Florentino Perez was recently praising him on Spanish radio, and there is a feeling that they will reach an ‘elegant and amicable resolution’.
That will be helped by the ‘great relationship’ that they have with his main suitors, Manchester United, who at this point are the ‘likely destination’ for him.
Any move is not about a question of money but more Varane’s desire to play in a new league; however, he is set to earn a ‘considerable increase’ in his salary, which is currently around €6m a year.
At the minute, no move is imminent, and he is set to rejoin Madrid on July 23d for pre-season. There is no set date for a transfer to happen, and it could take place earlier if negotiations go well.
If they don’t, he will simply take part in pre-season with Madrid, where there will be no issue as Carlo Ancelotti would like him to stay.
Indeed, they are presenting the idea that Sergio Ramos’ departure could give Varane a more leading role in the team in the hope that may tempt him to reject Manchester United’s advances and stay at the Bernabeu.
