Benfica are considering a move to beat Newcastle United and Real Madrid to the signing of Boca Juniors rising star Kevin Zenón.
That’s according to O Jogo, who say the Portuguese side are considering putting Zenón in their plans for the January transfer window.
The Portuguese side have ‘developed exploratory contacts’ for the 23-year-old, collecting as much data on the player as possible ahead of a move for him.
The data they’ve so far collected has encouraged them to step forward to the possibility of moving towards negotiations.
The possibility of a deal has already been presented to manager Bruno Lage, who will be a key player in plans moving forwards after arriving to replace Roger Schmidt after the close of the summer transfer window.
He’s approved the potential deal and Benfica are now considering stepping forward to try and get ahead of competition from the likes of Newcastle and Real Madrid.
In fact, O Jogo say any move would be a ‘feint’ of sorts, a small dodge to allow them to get ahead of Newcastle and Real Madrid, who can presumably offer more in transfer fees and wages.
The idea is to sign Zenón in January to give him time to adapt to the club and a new country before then stepping up next season, something they’ve done with other players in the past and think they can replicate here.
