Jan Vertonghen returning to Ajax has again been in the news in recent days, but Friday’s edition of De Telegraaf talks the whole thing down.

Interest isn’t denied, and it’s explained the Tottenham defender was seen as an ideal interim signing due to his good attitude and experience, however, the financials of a deal are prohibitive.

Several sources are said to have confirmed Ajax’s Marc Overmars has ‘thrown a fish’ to the player’s agent, with the idea being to open talks about moving back to Amsterdam.

A salary of €4-5m a year, or even close to that, is thought to be unreasonable for Ajax, and even though Vertonghen only has six months left on his Tottenham contract it’s thought the club would be looking at a ‘substantial fee’ to part with him now.

Ajax have now moved on to other targets and may decide instead to promote someone from their famed youth system.
