Birmingham City signed Christoph Klarer from German side SV Darmstadt 98 in the summer window.
The English press reported the League One side paid around €4.15m to buy the defender.
Thursday’s edition Rheinische Post have relayed that and quickly dismissed those claims. They say Birmingham City have invested less than that to secure the 24-year-old’s services.
Darmstadt took the Austrian from Fortuna Düsseldorf in July 2023. The report claims the latter were entitled to receive a percentage of a future sale.
Sources close to Fortuna Düsseldorf have informed the newspaper that they received 10% of the fee from Klarer’s sale to Birmingham City, which is around €300,000.
This would mean Chris Davies’ side paid €3m to Darmstadt for the centre-back.
Even though the figure is low, Fortuna Düsseldorf seem to be thrilled to have received this additional income.
Klarer signed a contract until 2027 with the Blues. He has since made eight appearances in all competitions, managing a goal and an assist in the process.
Birmingham City have won every league fixture so far when Klarer has featured for them.
