Newcastle United fans, you might recall a time when your club were very keen to sign a young French striker right after the new owners took over
That was Hugo Ekitike, and bold efforts were made to convince him to come to St James’ Park in January 2022, only for him to stay at Stade de Reims and eventually snub a second offer from the Magpies to sign for Paris Saint-Germain.
Well, his first season with the Ligue 1 giants wasn’t great, and now Newcastle, if they so wish, could get a chance at signing him once more, according to RMC Sport.
The French outlet carry a report on Tuesday afternoon revealing that Paris Saint-Germain have ‘opened the door’ for the player’s exit and have told his entourage as much.
As he is currently on loan from Reims, they will trigger the pre-agreed €34m option to buy as planned, but will then look to move him on if they can.
This is where Newcastle could come in should Eddie Howe still want him, even if Ekitike would prefer to stay put, as he’s ‘convinced he can do better next season’.
That being said, ‘he isn’t against the idea of going elsewhere’, with his conditions being ‘game time and playing in Europe’.
If Newcastle can offer him that, then they stand a real chance of getting him, unless Howe now has other plans.
