Standard Liege are in talks with Everton over a season-long loan deal for defender Niels Nkounkou.

That’s according to Le Soir, who say the Belgian side want to bring him in as support and competition for left-back Nicolas Gavory.

They say that the Belgian side are determined to find competition for Gavory, with manager Mbaye Leye confirming as much at a press conference on Friday.

That’s the only position they don’t have cover in, so the Liège club have opened talks with Nkounkou about a move.

The 20-year-old is currently the back-up for Lucas Digne at Everton and recently deputised for him in the Carabao Cup win over Huddersfield.

Game time is likely to be limited at Goodison Park, though, and it seems Liège want to take advantage of that to take him on loan until the end of the season.

Whether Everton will sanction the deal isn’t mentioned, although it would make little sense given they don’t have any cover for Digne after also losing youngster Thierry Small.

Perhaps the Blues are looking at another option before deadline day or even considering just using Ben Godfrey in that position again, which would open the door for Nkounkou to depart.
