RB Leipzig have insisted they are ‘very confident’ that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will rule in their favour in their court case against Leeds United.
Leeds’s long-running battle with the German side over a transfer clause for striker Jean-Kevin Augustin is nearing its conclusion, with the case finally seen by CAS yesterday.
The two have been in dispute for the best part of two years after Leeds refused to pay a €21m clause after the striker spent half a season at Elland Road before their promotion to the Premier League.
The Whites had argued that because the 2019/20 season had been suspended, the clause they had agreed to pay if they were promoted had expired, and they did not need to pay it.
Leipzig naturally disagreed, and FIFA have ruled in their favour, but Leeds took the case to CAS, who have had to work through a backlog of cases before being able to see it.
That happened yesterday, with Sport Buzzer reporting that after a ‘four hour hearing on Tuesday’, CAS are now set to give their verdict.
That could still take months due to the internal processes at CAS, but the transfer dispute is ‘on the home stretch’.
The outcome is as yet unknown, yet Leipzig are confident they will get their money and even potential interest that they’ve asked to be included.
That was certainly the message being presented by their commercial director Florian Scholz, who spoke on the matter after the hearing was over.
“RB Leipzig has once again clearly deposited its points in the hearing before the CAS today. We still consider ourselves to be in the right and are therefore very confident about the written verdict,” he told reporters.
