Tuesday evening’s news that Antoine Griezmann would be leaving Atlético Madrid in the summer was the definition of an ‘expected shock’.
The rumours sending him to Barcelona had been growing, to the point where both the French and Spanish media were treating it as a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.
With the announcement out of the way, Atlético can now focus on replacing the France international, and Le10 Sport believe they are looking at one of their old targets (they came extremely close to signing him from Lyon): Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette.
The striker has already been linked with a move to Spain over the past week, as Barcelona were said to be considering the Gunner as an alternative to Griezmann.
Atlético are said to have ‘launched first contacts’ to gather information, but no ‘concrete discussion’ has been opened for now.
He isn’t the only striker they are considering, however, as Le10 Sport claim Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani remains a ‘very serious’ option for Diego Simeone’s side.
Seeing how important Lacazette has been for Unai Emery this season, we find it hard to believe Arsenal would agree to part ways with the Frenchman unless they were offered the moon (or a very large sum of money).
We’ll see where this goes, but we won’t be holding our breath just yet.
