Burnley striker Wout Weghorst is a ‘hot candidate’ at Eintracht Frankfurt as they look to bolster their forward line this summer.
That’s according to BILD, who say the German side will have been ‘watching carefully’ as Weghorst scored for the Netherlands in their 2-1 win over Wales this summer.
They explain that director of football Markus Krösche is looking for a new goalscorer for his team and has identified Weghorst as an option.
He joined Burnley in the January transfer window as a replacement for Chris Wood but was unable to help the Clarets avoid relegation and ‘has no desire’ to play in the Championship next season.
Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner, who worked with the player at Wolfsburg, already wanted him in January, but his transfer fee was too high, and he ended up at Burnley instead.
The striker, however, has a clause written into his contract at Turf Moor that states he can be loaned out after relegation.
That means Frankfurt have a ‘great opportunity’ to get the striker, who they consider to be a top player, ‘at a reasonable price’ for next season.
This means he is a more attractive option to the other players they are looking at, such as Lucas Alario, whose fee of €7m is too high for them to consider.
Weghorst has already made his intentions clear, recently stating on international duty that “My future is not with Burnley. I will not go to the Championship with them. I am very ambitious, and also the national coach wants us to play at the highest level. There are some options for me.”
Eintracht are now seemingly keen to provide him with an exit, eyeing up a cut-price deal courtesy of Burnley’s relegation.
