Real Sociedad have denied claims from Willian Jose that they blocked a move to Tottenham, insisting there was never a sufficient offer from the Premier League side.
The Brazilian was heavily linked with a move to Spurs last year as they sought out an alternative to Harry Kane for then-manager Jose Mourinho.
They pursued a move for him at the end of the January transfer window in 2020, going as far as to make an offer and conduct negotiations with La Real about a move.
That never happened, with Tottenham refusing to meet Sociedad’s high demands and eventually deciding against a move.
Jose would eventually end up in the Premier League last season when he joined Wolves on loan in the January transfer window, although that proved to be a highly unsuccessful period for him.
He’s since returned to Sociedad and isn’t happy about the situation, recently hitting out at the club for blocking moves in the past.
The failed move to Tottenham is the one he is particularly unhappy about, having made it clear he really wanted the transfer at the time. It seems, though, that Real Sociedad don’t agree with his version of events.
Mundo Deportivo report that despite Jose stating there were multiple offers, there was only ever one bid from Tottenham, and that was ‘insufficient’.
After that first bid, there ‘no negotiation or counter-offer’ from Daniel Levy and co, nor was there one from Barcelona or Manchester United, who were interested later.
They offered €10m for a loan, but La Real didn’t sanction it because it was February, and there was no chance of them finding a replacement.
Their belief is that the striker is looking to reduce his price as much as possible by worsening his relationship with the club to force himself out.
Whether he’s successful in that remains to be seen but it seems that both parties have very different stories as far as Tottenham’s previous interest goes.
