Benfica have hit back at claims they want to appoint Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira, insisting that it is not true.
A Bola cover an official statement from the Portuguese club today, in which they ‘vehemently deny’ the report from earlier today.
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã reported today that Benfica were eyeing up the Wolves manager. They stated that Benfica president Rui Costa had picked Pereira as his number one target to replace Bruno Lage. It was even stated that the Wolves manager would be keen on the move.
That news has made its way back to Benfica and they’ve issued a statement on the club website, report A Bola, which has denied the information outright.
They ‘vehemently deny’ “that Vítor Pereira or any other coach is being considered to replace Bruno Lage” and consider this to be “false information”. In fact, they believe that the news has been released as an attempt at “destabilizing the club and its professional football team.”
So, Wolves fans, it appears there is nothing to worry about on this front. Pereira isn’t going to be joining Benfica any time soon, at least if their statement is anything to go by.
We stated in the original report about Benfica’s interest that it was worth taking with a pinch of salt, and now it seems Benfica want it to be completely dismissed as quickly as possible.
