Toby Alderweireld has one year left on his Tottenham Hotspur contract which has a £25m release clause valid until July 25th.

AS Roma have been credited with an interest in the Belgium international as they look to strengthen their defence for next season after allowing Kostas Manolas to join Napoli.

Saturday’s edition of Il Tempo claims Roma director of football Gianluca Petrachi ‘reached an agreement’ with the player’s father and agent for a four-year contract on Thursday.

It’s claimed Franco Baldini has already started negotiating with the north London club to reduce the centre-back’s asking price, but the response they received has been negative for now.

Roma have to act fast as the clause will expire in less than two weeks time, but given they don’t even want to pay that… maybe there’s not the rush suggested.

Another Italian newspaper Il Mattino once again claims Baldini met with the leaders of the English club, while Petrachi met with Alderweireld’s representatives.

The latter’s requests have been met, but they’re now waiting for the go-ahead from Tottenham for the deal to take shape.

Roma are hoping to lower Alderweireld’s asking price to ‘more or less half’ of his current release clause since he is already 30 years old. Il Mattino says it’s ‘not easy’.

Despite these Italian claims, it’s still questionable whether the defender will have so easily come to an agreement with Roma.

They’re not a step up from Tottenham and aren’t known for being great payers.
