Darwin Nunez did it at again at the weekend, this time scoring a brace in Benfica’s 2-1 win against Santa Clara.
The striker now has 23 goals this season, and Portuguese newspapers can’t stop writing about him. Especially because he’s expected to be involved in a big transfer very soon.
So as A Bola today claims it’ll be ‘almost impossible to hold’ Darwin in the summer, they recall West Ham United’s attempt to sign him in January, saying the battle for his signing should only get harder.
The newspaper points out that in the final days of the transfer window, the Hammers made a bid of €45m plus €15m in bonuses. That was turned down because Benfica believe the striker will soon be worth more, and they also needed him for the rest of the season.
Now A Bola leaves a warning for West Ham saying that besides the interest from the London side, there are ‘weekly indicators’ that other clubs ‘of bigger dimensions’ have Darwin on their list, ‘especially from the Premier League’.
The rise in the striker’s price is now a common belief in the Portuguese media.
As newspaper Correio da Manhã writes about him today, they point out that not long ago, Benfica used to think that €60m would be enough to take him from Lisbon. Now, a fee of €80m is more of a reality.
Record recalls West Ham’s attempt as well, and just like A Bola, they say the offer was rejected because the Eagles expect to make more in the summer.
The Uruguayan is protected by a release clause worth €150m.
