Earlier on Monday, we covered claims from Spain that West Ham were one step behind Valencia in the hunt for Maxi Gomez, as Faro de Vigo explained the Uruguayan had ‘everything sorted’ with the Mestalla based side.
This came after Sky Sports’ report of the Hammers having a bid accepted was rubbished, as it was made clear the Premier League club’s offer of €32.5m had been rejected.
If you didn’t want to believe the Spanish media for some reason, then we’ll let Celta Vigo’s president, Carlos Mouriño, explain the situation more clearly, as he spoke to the media on Monday, relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
He said: “We aren’t going to give Maxi away, and teams who want him need to start paying attention to the clause. From there, we can negotiate as equals, not with one party who consider themselves superior to the other.”
The Celta president went on to have a dig at Valencia, explaining they needed to ‘live up’ to their reputation.
He also admitted there were talks between the two sides currently ongoing, but there were ‘major differences’ between the two sides.
The same is likely to apply to West Ham, and Mouriño said that as long as there is no agreement with Celta Vigo, it doesn’t matter if Gomez has agreed terms with a new side.
It’s €50m for nothing for the Hammers and for Valencia.
