Last week saw Mesut Ozil to Fenerbahce rumours reach a higher level than they ever have before. The Arsenal player has been linked with a move to the Turkish club for several years, with him being on record saying he was a childhood fan.

For most of that time a move has seemed unrealistic for Fenerbahce to complete, even though it’s clear the desire has long been there. With Ozil’s contract at Arsenal expiring in the summer, things are getting a little different.

Not only only is Arsenal receiving a transfer fee becoming less likely, but the player himself will need to start to think about his future beyond the Gunners. Whilst he now has a superb contract in London, it’s near certain he’s not going to be matching that anywhere else.

Fenerbahce reports grew so big last week that there were even claims of where Ozil would be living in Istanbul, and that plans were being made for his presentation. Turkish media also sent journalists to speak to people in the village where the player’s family originate from.

Some claims suggested Fenerbahce could announce the signing on Saturday, which of course didn’t happen.

The club’s president, Ali Koç, has now spoken about the potential move.

Quoted by Sabah he makes clear it would be very welcome, but wouldn’t go any further than that: “I am still saying that Mesut Ozil is a dream. No person from our club has made a statement. It is a subject we are closer to than in the past. It may or may not end. Nothing more precise… After we make a signing, we make the statement.”
