Ferran Torres was one of the new players to arrive at Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
Pep Guardiola’s side took the winger from Valencia for a reported fee of €23m excluding bonuses.
The Spain international has been an instant hit at the Etihad, scoring five goals and managing two assists in all competitions. This includes three goals in his first three Champions League appearances for the Citizens.
Torres, who was born in the Valencia region, came up through the ranks of the Spanish club’s youth system before making his way into their senior team in 2017. Barcelona showed interest in the past, but they failed to secure his signature on two different occasions.
Valencia president Anil Murthy has now backed his club to win La Liga before 2030 and wants to achieve it with a base of academy players in the first team.
Sport have relayed his comments and the newspaper also adds Murthy ‘regretted the departure’ of the 20-year-old to City. The La Liga side’s chief insisted Valencia will implement a plan to stop talented players like Torres moving elsewhere.
“I hope we keep most of the young players. Look at our past experience of bringing players under the age of 16 from other countries, players with no history of living here, who have no friends, cousins or grandparents living here, no roots,” Murthy said.
“They are playing for money. If you train someone for eight years and they have no roots, what happens? They go to the club that pays them the most. This has also happened to us.”
Yunus Musah is another young bright talent at Valencia and Sport explains Los Ches want to extend his contract so that another ‘Ferran Torres case’ is not repeated.
