As the Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira was spotted at the Etihad Stadium watching Manchester City’s Champions League tie against Monaco last night, the Portuguese press would obviously link his trip to some transfer business.
That’s exactly what newspaper O Jogo did today, and say he was there to talk about Ederson, who has been linked a lot with a Manchester City move in the past year.
They say Vieira’s presence is Manchester is something that strenghtens Pep Guardiola’s work to have a preference over the player.
The article doesn’t give many details, and even sounds a bit vague on how would Manchester City convince Benfica to assure them such option.
Having recently signed a new contract which now runs until 2023, Ederson now has a €60m release clause. That’s what gives Benfica the advantage of asking for a high price, which according to O Jogo, is of at least €40m.
The Eagles’ idea here would be to make Ederson the second most expensive goalkeeper ever, only behind Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon, and Manchester City certainly have the money to achieve that.
