Just before the transfer window closed, reports started to emerge in Italy that Newcastle United were interested in Victor Osimhen.
It was immediately touted as a move for the summer transfer window, as the Magpies’ precarious position in the Premier League table meant a player of the Nigeria international’s stature wasn’t going to leave a Europa League club for one fighting against relegation, but if Eddie Howe does steer them clear from falling back into the Championship, the next few months could get interesting.
That being said, Napoli, where the striker currently plays, aren’t going to let their star man leave so easily, as explained by Oma Akatugba, described as a member of Victor Osimhen’s entourage, and then further on agent, when speaking to Calcio Napoli 24.
Asked about the former Lille goalscorer’s future, he said: “The will of Napoli is to offer him a new contract because there have been interests in the Premier League. To convince him to stay, given that these interests will recur, the club are preparing the renewal offer.”
And just in case you weren’t sure which club he was talking about, Calcio Napoli 24 link to another article they did on transfer deadline day, recalling a report from Il Mattino mentioning the Magpies and an interest forward.
The 23-year-old has been in good form for the Serie A side this season, as, despite missing a number of games due to a fractured cheekbone, he has still managed to find the back of the net 10 times in 17 appearances, most recently in the 2-0 win over Venezia on Sunday, his first start since November 21st.
Should an exit happen, Napoli would surely be looking for more than the €80m package they agreed to buy him from Lille.
