Real Betis will play the long game to sign Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham this summer, hoping to put the pressure on later in the transfer window.

That’s according to ABC Sevilla, who report that contacts between Betis and Lo Celso have been ongoing for some time in the hope of getting him back to the club.

The newspaper explains that the affection between the two parties is mutual and that has been demonstrated in various meetings that have already taken place.

This summer has been marked as the one in which they could make a reunion happen as Lo Celso is set to enter the final year of his contract with Tottenham.

That means it’s the last opportunity for Tottenham to make money from a sale, something Betis want to use to their advantage with Lo Celso’s desire to move also in their favour.

They’ve done this before to sign other players and want to repeat the trick, although they need to negotiate Tottenham down too.

The plan is to wait until the end of the window in the hope that they can bring Spurs down from a €15m demand to something below €10m, which would suit Betis perfectly.

Time is on Betis’ favour in this sense as Lo Celso is not set to return to Tottenham until August because of his participation in Copa América, which will extend his holidays.

Thus, Betis will wait patiently and then apply pressure from that point onwards, looking to take advantage of Tottenham’s need to sell and the dwindling time they’ll have to secure it at that point.

They’re more than happy to play the long game, hence recent comments from the likes of sports director Manu Fajardo insisting nothing is on the cards and the midfielder is a remote option for them.
