It appears that despite failing to impress on loan at Benfica, Alvaro Carreras will be continuing his career with the Portuguese club, far away from Manchester United.
That’s according to Record, who have an article on Friday afternoon revealing that the Lisbon side ‘intend to activate the buy-out clause’ regardless of the clause that would have triggered it automatically.
It was negotiated that Benfica would pay Manchester United €6m in case the left-back started half of their matches, but that won’t be something to be keeping an eye out going forward.
That’s because Record have discovered that the Portuguese side are ‘planning to buy the player’ even if he doesn’t meet those standards.
Down his end, the Spaniard is ‘determined to convince’ his manager, Roger Schmidt, that he deserves to start in the final games of the season, despite him having only played 264 minutes of football to date.
The 20-year-old was sent to Benfica in January after his successful loan at Granada was cut short, and while it hasn’t gone to plan on the field for the defender, it seems to have been enough to secure an exit from Manchester United.
Carreras was initially signed on a free transfer by the Red Devils from Real Madrid back in 2020, meaning any money they make from a sale will be a profit.
