FC Twente are willing to wait to sign Wout Weghorst from Burnley this summer and factored in him potentially starring at Euro 2024 into their plans too.
That’s according to journalist Leon ten Voorde, who says the Dutch club are aware that his price tag could rise considerably this summer.
Weghorst is expected to be moved on by Burnley, with it clear he’s not a part of their plans moving forwards and him having pushed to leave the club last summer when they were relegated.
Several Dutch sides have shown an interest in him, with FC Twente among them, although for now all transfer processes are on hold as he’s at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.
He’s already made his impact in Germany, as he did in Qatar at the World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the Netherlands opening game against Poland.
Twente are aware of the potential growing competition in the Burnley man and have taken that into account, even making it clear they’re willing to wait to try and get him this summer.
“Since Weghorst brought an entire country into ecstasy with his goal, while the rest of Europe watched in admiration, his market value has increased considerably,” Ten Voorde explained to Tubantia.
“At FC Twente they have always taken this scenario into account. It’s all well and good that declarations of love back and forth, but first we have to wait for the European Championship.
“The question is how long FC Twente will be prepared to hope for something. FC Twente obviously wants to wait a little longer for Weghorst, but there will have to come a time when the club receives a signal as to what is feasible or not. In the meantime, we can start considering what possible alternatives could be.”
