This morning, we relayed news that Marseille had finally managed to re-sign their former winger Florian Thauvin on loan from Newcastle after weeks of negotiations.
Desperate to return to the club he never should have left, the right-winger’s deal was announced during a press conference held by the club owner and staff to clarify some of the uncertainties surrounding the Ligue 1 side’s future as the club looks for a buyer.
Talk of this deal happening go back to before last year’s loan came to an end, meaning a lot of effort went into this, which is exactly what La Provence report on Thursday.
According to the local newspaper, who spoke to a member of Thauvin’s entourage, the owner herself, Margarita Louis-Dreyfus, is said to have made ‘a big effort’ to get the Frenchman back to the club, and was personally got involved to make it all happen.
The length of the negotiations suggest Newcastle weren’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of seeing a player they spent €17.5m on a summer ago, but in the end, the player’s wishes seem to have been granted as he will eventually return permanently to Marseille once the compulsory buyback clause is activated towards the end of the coming season.
