New Tottenham manager Thomas Frank was once in line for the FC Midtjylland job but picked Brentford, and the rest is history.

That’s according to Claus Steinlein, Midtjylland’s current owner, who has revealed how things could have been very different for the new Tottenham boss via Tipsbladet.

Frank was confirmed as Tottenham’s latest manager this week, replacing Ange Postecoglou at the helm after his sacking earlier this month.

He arrives at Spurs with a big reputation after his time in England so far, with the 51-year-old establishing himself as one of the rising coached in England in his seven years at Brentford.

He took charge of them in October 2018 and over the course of 317 games led them to the Premier League from the Championship, establishing them as a top-flight team after promotion in 2021.

The Dane has now secured the big job he’s long been linked with, tasked with guiding Tottenham in the Champions League and up the Premier League table after a 17th placed finish last week.

It could have been very different, though, as he was being eyed up at Midtjylland before his move to Brentford, with the two clubs sharing an ownership at the time.

“I would say that when he went to Brentford and became assistant coach, there was the same ownership, and me and Rasmus Ankersen discussed it, but he wanted to go to Brentford,” explained Steinlein.

“We had him in our thoughts about whether he could be the next coach at FC Midtjylland, but then it happened in Brentford that everything worked out for him, he got the chance, and then he has only looked in one direction, and that is forward.

“He has been in the game, also mostly because of his human values and the way he is. You have to remember that the time in Brøndby was also special. I think all coaches get fired.”
