Browsing through the Italian newspapers on a daily basis, we can’t say we come across stories involving Aberdeen FC very often, so when they do, we make sure they are covered.

While there have been reports that Serie A sides have been keeping an eye on Calvin Ramsay, there is another man in Jim Goodwin’s squad being monitored by an Italian club, and that’s Lewis Ferguson.

The 22-year-old is undeniably one of the star men for Aberdeen at Pittodrie Stadium, scoring 14 goals and picking up one assist in 38 appearances this season, and this has caught the eye of Cagliari.

The idea behind all this is the likely departure of Nahitan Nández this summer, who will need replacing, which is where Ferguson comes in.

This all comes from Corriere dello Sport, who claim the Aberdeen star ‘is under close observation’ from Cagliari, and a negotiation ‘could materialise’.

It’s made clear ‘his plays have not gone unnoticed’ by those monitoring the market for the Italian club, and they have been ‘following him carefully for almost a year’, as they prepare for the post-Nández.

Should Ferguson sign, he would be ‘the first Scotsman in the history of Cagliari’, and he is seen as the ‘right profile’ to replace the Uruguayan ‘not only on the pitch but also in the heart of the fans’.

His ‘grit, running, technique and great application on the pitch are his best weapons’, and the club’s transfer chief Tommaso Giulini ‘will meet his agent, Bill McMurdo’ in ‘the next few days’.

The biggest obstacle for Cagliari in this endeavour is Aberdeen themselves, because while Ferguson ‘seems ready to marry the cause’ of the Sardinia based club, ‘the green light from the Scots is long in coming’.

The Serie A side are said to be offering €3.5m for the midfielder, but The Dons ‘hope to collect at least double that amount’ from any transfer.

However, ‘diplomacy is at work, and it cannot be ruled out that the white smoke (meaning an agreement being reached and the transfer going through) may arrive before the end of the season’.
