Stefan de Vrij has been one of the star players in Inter Milan’s defence this season, a defence which has conceded only two goals in the first six league matches.
The Netherlands international started for his side against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, but he and his teammates were unsuccessful in avoiding their first defeat of this campaign at the hands of Ernesto Valverde’s side.
Mundo Deportivo reported on Wednesday the La Liga winners looked at the 27-year-old in 2018, but they opted to sign Clément Lenglet instead.
On October 3rd, we carried a report from InterLive.it, who claimed Valverde prefers De Vrij over his teammate Milan Škriniar to strengthen the centre-back position.
It was also explained the Catalan club are willing to offer €50m for De Vrij, but would prefer Samuel Umtiti or Jean-Clair Todibo as part of the deal.
Mundo Deportivo journalist Miguel Rico now claims the option to sign De Vrij was discussed at Barcelona, but the Spanish champions didn’t take it up.
He states the Italians offered the defender ‘several times’, but the Blaugrana ‘said no’.
It remains to be seen how the Italian press will respond to the report.
