Fernando Llorente has made no secret of his desire to return to Athletic Club Bilbao, even holding a hand out when it wasn’t clear whether they’d welcome him home or not.
Now the club has a new president and Aitor Elizegi has made it clear that signing the striker is a possibility, depending on how willing Tottenham are to cooperate.
Llorente has a contract lasting until the end of the current season, but Athletic need players in now and their Basque recruitment strategy leaves a very small pool of options.
Whilst Elizegi has been cool and calm when speaking publicly, the very well informed El Correo says there’s a ‘full offensive’ going on in the background to sign the Spurs player this month.
There’s some confidence an agreement can be found, especially with plenty of the window left to go. Lllorente and his former club are said to be in ‘constant conversations’ about the potential move and work is continuing.
With Athletic fourth from bottom, Llorente would have the opportunity to return and help save them from relegation. That would consign any doubts about his relationship with the club to the dustbin, following his difficult exit to Juventus.
