Pedro to Roma has been a story dominating the Italian press in recent months, as the Spaniard is going to be a free agent and AS Roma like the fact they won’t have to pay for him.
While no transfer fee would be needed to sign him, acquiring his services does come at a price through his wages, which remains an issue in Italy’s capital.
There’s been some confidence in the past couple of weeks that Roma are in the lead for this deal regardless of claimed competition from Juventus, and Corriere della Sera reiterate this on Monday, explaining the forward is getting ‘closer and closer’ to the Serie A side.
In fact, they go as far as saying he’s ‘said yes’, as the two year contract of €3m/year with an option for a third ‘satisfies’ his request, and he has already ‘made it known’ a move to the club interests him.
However, ‘the ultimate obstacle’ in getting the deal over the line is offloading some of the current big wages already at Roma, such as those of Javier Pastore, Juan Jesus and Alessandro Florenzi.
Doing so would then allow the Italians to ‘give the green light’ for the Spaniard.
It’s all very simple yet still complicated, as getting rid of players on high wages has always been the bane of football clubs.
