It’s fair to say that Marcos Rojo’s return to Estudiantes de La Plata didn’t go as planned.
Loaned by Manchester United in January on a six-month deal, the defender could only make one appearance for the Argentine side so far.
Rojo first struggled with an injury, and now with the Coronavirus break, there’s the chance he could return to England with this bitter taste.
That’s why several Argentine media outlets have been reporting Estudiantes’ wish to keep the defender for longer. And now their manager confirms this is the will from both the club and the player.
Interviewed by TNT Sports this week, Leandro Desabato talked about the importance Rojo would have in case he managed to stay.
“His desire is to stay. The little I talked to him at this time about the stop is that he’d like to continue playing until January of next year. But there are things that don’t depend on him. It doesn’t end with him deciding. In this squad that I have there are many kids, his presence can do them very well,” said Desábato (via La Nacion).
When Manchester United agreed the short-term loan, the Argentine media had been saying the move could be made permanent in the middle of the year. But it’s been a few months since their speech has changed, and now a loan extension sounds more likely.
