Following some great performances in the Premier League with Aston Villa, which have been backed up at international level with Argentina, Emiliano Martínez has many suitors in Europe.
The World Cup winner is currently at Villa Park on a contract until 2027, which is the result of a renewal from just over a year ago, in January 2022.
A lot has changed since then, with the Aston Villa goalkeeper gaining worldwide recognition, which has led to inevitable transfer rumours sending the 30-year-old away from Birmingham.
None have come to fruition to date, but there are teams said to be interested in signing him, like AS Roma in Italy.
There have been a few suggestions of late, none strong enough for us to really cover, but the latest from Tuttosport, relayed by Siamo La Roma, was interesting.
They state that while AS Roma may be keen, a lot could depend on the future of José Mourinho, who may or may not be in his last season in charge in Italy’s capital.
It’s stated that while the Serie A side ‘like’ the Aston Villa star, ‘the eventual transfer of the goalkeeper is closely linked to Mourinho’s future on the Giallorossi bench’.
That’s because the Portuguese manager ‘would prefer Rui Patricio’ to remain where he is next season, clearly having a soft spot for the former Wolves shot stopper.
Despite this, the article does state Martinez will ‘in all likelihood leave the English clubs in the coming months’, with many clubs around Europe keen on his services.
Now, as to the question whether the player himself would want a transfer, you have to imagine that a World Cup winner, who has already achieved all he can at international level, will want to do the same at club level if given the chance.
That means playing regular elite European football and fighting for titles, which, with all due respect’ will not start happening at Aston Villa next year, as they currently sit 11th in the Premier League after 26 games, 13 points behind fourth placed Tottenham.
That’s just us speculating, of course, but there will likely come a time when the ambitious Martínez will feel he has outgrown Villa Park.
Unless Unai Emery pulls off some sort of miracle, of course.
