While there’s nothing to worry about just yet, Rafael Benitez has received a phone call from another club to see if he’d be interested in leaving Newcastle United at the end of the season.

The Spaniard recently revealed talks regarding his St James’ Park future were due to start in the coming week, meaning he’s open to a prolonged stay in the north of England, but that could all change if he decides he wants to manage a team in the Champions League.

According to Il Mattino on Monday, Napoli’s Aurelio de Laurentiis, who is worried he could lose Maurizio Sarri at the end of the season, rang his former manager to ask him if he would be interested in returning to the south of Italy.

The Italian newspaper reveal Benitez ‘did not expect the call and was very perplexed’, and while he didn’t say yes to the Serie A club, he also didn’t say no.

That could be seen as a worrying sign for Newcastle, but there’s also some good news.

Il Mattino explain the reasons why Benitez left the Italian club in the first place are still there: there is still no sports centre, and the club’s infrastructures are still the same.

Benitez isn’t the only one left perplexed. This all seemed to start from Spain’s Don Balon, which isn’t exactly an endorsement, and it’s odd that’s carried through to Italy.
