Just a a couple of weeks ago, the Portuguese press reported Manchester United’s interest in Sporting fullback Nuno Mendes.

It’s been claimed the youngster was offered to the Red Devils in January during the negotiations for the transfer of Bruno Fernandes, since they both share the same agent.

The Premier League side would now be interested in signing Mendes in the next transfer window, but it seems Sporting have started working against that.

According to Portuguese newspaper Record today, the Lions are working to renew the player’s contract so they can convince him to stay in Lisbon for longer.

It’s claimed that Sporting are offering the player a contract until 2025, which includes a release clause of €45m.

Record points out that Mendes is followed by Manchester United and other top Premier League clubs, and that’s why the Lisbon side need to work hard on protecting him.

Mendes turns 18 years of age on Friday, and needs to wait until his birthday before signing the new deal.
