On Monday, the Italian media got the ball rolling on the idea that Chelsea are interested in Denzel Dumfries for a January deal.
The Dutchman has been a target for the Blues for a short while now, and an attempt was reportedly made last summer, only for the more important Wesley Fofana deal to take over.
Now that Chelsea have the Frenchman, they can fully focus their attention on the Inter defender, with Corriere dello Sport on Monday claiming the idea was to secure a deal in January, to then leave the right-back on loan at the Serie A side until the end of the campaign.
It was believed the Premier League club were ready to put up to €50m on the table to get the job done, and this is something Inter appear to be preparing themselves for.
There’s no panic of any sort, but the Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday have a little bit extra on the matter, explaining that because Dumfries ‘continues to be in the sights of Chelsea’ regarding a January deal (with a loan back), they have ‘long identified’ Wilfried Singo from Torino as a ‘possible replacement’ for the 2023-24 season.
Inter also ‘hope for’ the aforementioned deal that would see the Blues only welcome their right-back next season, as they do not want to ‘deprive themselves of an immovable starter during the current campaign’.
Either way, the idea of Inter starting any sort of talks to sign Singo ‘is now considered premature’, probably because there’s a World Cup to play first, and we all know how such an event can affect the stock of players.
The bottom line is, Chelsea want to sign Denzel Dumfries in January, but seem happy to leave him back at Inter until the end of the campaign.
