Tottenham strongly block player’s exit – Spurs close door on his exit, make stance clear

On June 13th, ESPN journalists Esteban Edul and Leo Gabes stated Real Madrid are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero this summer.

They also said the La Liga winners would find it difficult to snatch the defender away from the north London club.

Fast forward to August and TyC Sports journalist Gastón Edul took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss Real Madrid’s attempt to try and sign the Tottenham player.

He claims Los Blancos contacted Spurs and they have shown willingness to make an offer for the 26-year-old.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have let Real Madrid know that they will not negotiate because they have no plans to sell the Argentina international.

His contract lasts until 2026 and Spurs will have to tie the Copa América winner down to a new deal, to fend off interested parties.

Romero graduated from Argentine side Club Atlético Belgrano and spent two years with their first team before moving to Europe in 2018.

Last week, ESPN had a chat with him and one of the topics discussed was the possibility of returning to his former club, and his comments are relayed by TyC Sports.

When responding to that, Romero revealed his desire to continue in Europe for a long time.

“I do, obviously. To make promises at this stage would be foolish, because, God willing, I still have a long way to go in Europe and, as I said before, I want to see where the maximum is to see how far I can go,” he said.

“But yes, surely tomorrow I would love to get rid of that thorn of playing in Alberdi, because the truth is that I never played. With the people and everything, it would be something nice.”

When ESPN asked him whether he’s the best defender in the world, Romero explained: “I’m not the best, I don’t put myself in that analysis. It’s nice to be told that, but I try to live day by day, to get up and go to training to keep learning, trying to improve, to value my teammates and take the positives from them.

“I don’t put that title on myself at all, there are too many players. I want to see where my maximum is, that’s my motivation. It’s not easy to be a starter for the Argentina national team and play in the best league in the world (…) I’ve won everything, I’m trying to keep that in my head.”
