Wolverhampton Wanderers allowed Gonçalo Guedes to join Benfica on a loan deal in the winter market, after signing him from Valencia last summer.
Although the forward managed two goals and an assist from 18 games for Wolves, he returned to his former club to get his career back on track. He scored two goals from eight matches for the Eagles before being sidelined due to a meniscus injury last month.
On Friday, A Bola stated the Portuguese club have ‘already defined’ their decision to keep the Wolves player after this season. This is further backed up by AS on Saturday.
The 26-year-old is currently focusing on regaining full fitness and aims to feature again for the Eagles this season.
Roger Schmidt’s side, for their part, ‘intend to keep’ the Portugal international at the club. As part of the loan agreement, they don’t have an option to buy him. Therefore, Benfica will have to negotiate a new deal with Wolves for Guedes.
After the injury brought ‘bad news’ to the player, Benfica’s desire to retain him could be seen as good news for the Wolves man.
AS don’t mention whether Benfica are looking to negotiate another loan deal or intend to buy Gudes from Julen Lopetegui’s side in the summer. There’s also no meniton of Wolves’ stance on the potential operation.
