Bayern Munich could sell Leroy Sane or Serge Gnabry this summer to help fund a permanent move for Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.
That’s according to BILD journalist Tobias Altschäffl, relayed by FCB Inside, who says that is one option the Germans are looking at to make the Portuguese defender a permanent fixture in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad.
Cancelo joined Bayern on loan from Manchester City at the end of the January transfer window in one of the more surprising moves of deadline day.
The loan deal includes a €70m option to make it permanent but it has been made clear the German giants have no intention of exercising it, with club chief Hasan Salihamidzic admitting as much publicly.
He did, however, make it clear that they would work to make a permanent deal happen if all sides wanted it, hinting at negotiations with Manchester City in the summer.
They’d need to raise funds to do so and according to Altschäffl, there is one scenario they club are currently looking at.
FCB Inside report him saying on the Bayern Insider podcast that the ‘sale of a Bayern star’ would help ‘flush enough money’ into the club that they would be able to sit down at the negotiating table with Manchester City.
According to him, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry are ‘two potential strike candidates’ for the club to get rid of to raise funds.
Letting either of those players leave would also create more space on the flanks for Cancelo, which would be important if Julian Nagelsmann permanently changes to a back three with wing-backs.
That would make signing Cancelo more logical, particularly as Kingsley Coman has been playing in the role this season.
It will all depend on how much Manchester City want for the Portuguese star, but it seems there is a plan there at Bayern if that price is set at a figure they consider acceptable.
