Maarten Stekelenburg’s contract with Everton expires this summer, and the goalkeeper is likely to return to the Netherlands, where there’s growing interest in his signature.
He would have been set to leave the Toffees at the end of this month, but he’s expected to stay with the Merseyside club until the current season ends. That could provide some frustration for Sparta Rotterdam, one of the Dutch clubs keen to sign the the free agent.
AD.nl report Sparta’s current goalkeeper Tim Coremans has picked up a serious knee injury. He’s torn his knee ligaments and is now expected to be out of action for around nine months.
Therefore, the Eredivisie know they need to secure themselves a senior goalkeeper for the start of next season, and still ‘hope’ to sign Stekelenburg once he exits Goodison Park.
Unfortunately for them, the stopper is currently taking his time and not rushing any decisions, concentrating on training over the next few weeks with Everton.
That could prove a frustration for Sparta, especially when they know other clubs are also interested.
