Benfica are doubting whether they should allow defender Tomas Araujo to join Wolverhampton Wanderers as they believe he can develop further with them.

That’s according to Kicker, who say Wolves have ‘made a concrete appearance’ for the defender but may need to work on convincing the Portuguese club into a transfer.

They explain that VfB Stuttgart had been eying Araujo as a replacement for Konstantino Mavropanos following his move to West Ham and they’ve been working on a deal but that’s not come to anything as yet.

Araujo is in ‘high demand’ as Wolves are now in the picture in a concrete manner as they look to do business themselves before the end of the transfer window.

Their interest ‘significantly reduces the chances’ of VfB getting their man as they are unable to make any big or small steps in a financial sense.

That’s one problem, the other is Benfica, where those in charge and coach Roger Schmidt have ‘now moved away’ from the idea of loaning out the young star.

They are considering keeping the 21-year-old instead, believing that he could get the necessary playing time with them next season and develop further as a result.

That could just be a negotiating tactic to get more out of Wolves now they’re showing an interest, and Portuguese sides certainly know how to deal with Premier League clubs to eke out every last penny, but that remains to be seen.

It would not be surprising if we see more of Araujo before Friday and Benfica’s current stance proves to be a fluid one up to that point.
