Starting off the season as a regular under David Moyes, Fabián Balbuena’s future looked quite bright at London Stadium.
However, something happened after December 27th, as the centre-back failed to set foot on a Premier League pitch between then and April 11th.
His 37 minute cameo against Leicester City was his first in England’s top tier since a 2-2 draw against Brighton the day after Boxing Day, and with a contract running out in the summer, his future now seems all but sealed.
The Paraguay international, who joined from Corinthians back in 2018, has recently hinted he could return to Brazil, and his agent also stated the defender ‘will not continue’ with the Hammers going forward.
‘Several’ clubs were said to be after him, and one of those could be Lazio, if Corriere dello Sport are to be believed.
The Italian newspaper explain the West Ham player is one of many the Serie A club are looking at ahead of the transfer window, as they will need to bolster their defensive depth following the expected returns of Wesley Hoedt and Matteo Musacchio to Southampton and Milan respectively.
It’s stated Lazio tried their luck in the past with Balbuena, and this could be an ideal chance to do so again, with him free of all constraints and likely to want to try something new after three years in England.
We’ll have to wait and see, but it appears the Paraguayan could land comfortably on his feet if Simone Inzaghi comes knocking.
