Earlier on Monday, we covered a report in the Catalan press regarding the future of Mohamed Salah and a potential transfer to Barcelona.

The news came from Sport, who explained that things had taken an unexpected turn, with him now likelier to stay at Liverpool than move to Spain.

Details weren’t given, but those are provided by AS, who back up the idea that Barcelona have given up on Salah, as they have ‘decided to rule out the operation of bringing’ the Egyptian star to the Camp Nou.

This is because the Liverpool forward ‘demanded an annual wage of around €17m for the five seasons he was going to sign’, and those were figures he was ‘inflexible’ on.

This has ‘forced’ Barcelona to back away, not just because of the wages, but also because the club would have then needed to deal with the ‘added inconvenience of having to negotiate the player’s departure with Liverpool’.

The belief is that on top of his high demands, the Catalans ‘would have to add a transfer that would not be less than €70m’.

It’s clear Liverpool would rather not lose their star man and renew if they can, but a lot will continue to rest on how much Salah wants to be paid, which was clearly one of the issues in talks with Barcelona.
