On September 1st, Belgium newspaper HLN reported that Lazar Markovic’s move to Anderlecht collapsed at the last minute even after Liverpool had agreed a deal. His agent was at the Belgium club’s offices and negotiated for two hours, but it didn’t come to fruition.

The Serbian international spent the second half of the last season on loan with the Jupiler Pro League club and despite having a poor start, he managed to turn things around in the end.

Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s side wanted to secure the 24-year-old’s signature on a permanent deal in order to please their fans, according to Het Belang van Limburg, as the newspaper goes on to suggest the supporters had called for his signing ‘for almost the whole summer’.

It’s also claimed that Anderlecht offered a three-year deal with an option to further extend it by a year for the winger, but the player’s wage demands were a problem for the Belgian outfit to complete the deal.

Markovic has one year left on his contract at Anfield and will continue with Jurgen Klopp’s side, unless he can find a move to a country with an open window, at least until January.
