When Benfica were budgeting their transfer finances this summer, it’s very likely they wouldn’t have accounted for receiving more money for David Luiz.
The Brazilian defender moved from PSG to Chelsea on deadline day, in one of the most surprising last minute deals in recent years.
Luiz going back to his old Stamford Bridge club was an unexpected development, but very much a welcome one for Benfica.
The Portuguese club are set to receive 2% of the fee, with O Jogo putting the total price of the transfer at €38.5m. The additional amount for Benfica works out to be around €770k, and they get the money because of the solidarity mechanism between clubs.
Luiz was with Benfica between the age of 19 and 23, so the Portuguese club played played a big part in his development. From Benfica, Luiz went to Chelsea, over to PSG, and is now back at Chelsea again.
If the pattern continues then he’d be returning to Benfica soon!
